So just how do satNavs work?

Mk & I have been up to Manchester with J & DK, to take him for a visit to the Ponseti clinic to have his legs plastered.
G kindly set up the satnav, phone, aerial & all other technical aids for us last night as we had to be there by 9.45am
All went well & we are now home, having resuscitated with tea & chocolate digestives.
Why did the Satnav take us up the M6, A56 & through the middle of Manchester this morning, in the rush hour, but bring us home down the M60, M62, M6, missing all of the city out?
A couple from Nuneaton told us that their TomTom did this, so just note the route home & do it in reverse next time.
We duly noted the route home - motorways & junctions.
Next Wednesday's trip should be childsplay!

like all modern electronics they are just to smart and complicated for Baby Boomers or anyone over 15 to understand.
With mine you can actually look at the route it plans to take you an and decide whether you think it's ridiculous or not. You can also tell it if you want to use motorways or avoid motorways or take the shortest route. Mine can also talk to you with an English or an American accent. I think to fully comprehend them would require a three-year residential course.
Glad to hear the hospital trip was a success.

It suggested the same when we went last time, I just carried on up the M6 and it found the alternative route that you took home. I think that is the answer, use the Sat nav, but stay on the M6 past where it tells you to get off originally.
