Home again - tea, toast & jetlag for elevenses.

A fine specimen at Lincoln Park Zoo.

This one for Elaine - about 12 ft across, on a roof on Navy Pier.

110 West Oak Street.

The skyline from the lake shore, half way back from the zoo -aj resting!

The train to Wilmette - aj smiling (about to spend 30 minutes sitting down)

Thanks to bmi for making aj a winner of premium economy flights to Chicago.
We wish that they had included the tax & allowed us to stay longer, but it was great.
Premium is wonderful I could hardly reach the seat in front, seats were big & we were well looked after.
We walked many miles, to the zoo, Navy Pier, the Art Institute, the Historic Quarter........
The temp has been in the 80s all week, 87 on Saturday! It should be low 60s in October.
A highlight was visiting Hubert Catchpole's great friend & colleague, Milton Elmer & his wife, Elaine, at their home in Wilmette. Catch & Milt worked together for 60 years, their last paper was published in 2005, just before Catch's 98 th birthday!
We visited 110 West Oak street, Catch's home of over 30 years, where we have spent many happy hours in Catch's company.
This final block of 3 early 20th century houses are threatened with demolition to make way for another high rise. What a pity.
Catch was proud of his garden, "the only back yard in Oak Street".
G met us at Manchester airport, having driven from Cardiff, after only 4 hours sleep," fresh" from the France/NZ rugby match. (watching, not playing)
We visited P & A , J & T in their new home, which is lovely. They are amazingly well organised after only 2 days.
In Chicago we bought "crocs", Ugg boots & tennis gear. All about half UK prices.
Chicago O'Hare airport is all but devoid of shops - take a good book (or a friend).

Looks and sound very nice. Amazing weather. Cannot get J to say Grandma, but we are working on it.

Don't know why she kept taking photos of a strange fat woman who kept following us. Americans have no concept of twin beds, just one vast bed in a room luckily big enough that you are not aware of sharing it. Was forced to walk miles in uncustomary heat but actually lost weight. jen

Dear Gill

The spider residing under the dishwsher in our holoday lodge was considerably bigger than this one in your picture, I can assure you. Even Ben paled as I asked him (from the chair I was standing on) to remove it - he said it was a tarantula, and that I must learn to show Tim how to react reasonably to such things.

aj was a touch sarcastic when the hotel room that I had booked had a large bed.
I was a little relieved when the aj hotel also had one very large bed.
We have shared a berth since our very early days.
I wonder if we snored in those days?
I thought that the pics of aj were good.
Elaine, I do not believe that your spider had a 12ft girth.
How big was this chalet?
Ben must make Tim realise thatonly girlies are scared of spiders.

Crocs origated in Boulder fyi!
I remember Catch's previous home - on West Eugenie Street with his wife-to-be Robin. There were two houses with a secret passage through the closet.
On one side there was a German Shepherd dog called Marco who only understood German.

Robin lived in an apartment; we picked her up to go out to dinner.Catch "bumped" cars fore & aft whilst parking outside her apartment.
He collected a persian runner & bought me/us a copenhagen frog from the shop.
He lived with Johanna & James in W Eugenie.
This is now the "historic quarter", the house has not changed.
